I have never been to Ohio, along with New York or Indiana, so I didn't know what kind of landscape or weather to expect. Ohio is very beautiful, especially Kirtland. You would almost think that Kirtland should have been named "beautiful city(not Nauvoo)." Out of all the towns we traveled to in which the pioneers lived I was most impressed with Kirtland. Maybe that impression came about because the Father, Son, and other Heavenly Messengers appeared here. Many different Prophets appeared to restore vital keys in our church. Can you believe that there are 4 different sites in the Kirtland area that the Father and Son appeared? What an amazing town to have the privilege to host the most important people in the world! Historic Kirtland has many buildings all within walking distance of each other. Some of the buildings are the Visitors Center, Newell K Whitney Store, John Johnson Inn, the sawmill, and the Ashery.
The 2nd, or the bigger, nicer N.K. Whitney Store.
The inside of the store. Notice the book on the counter. You can look in the book to see if any of your ancestors made purchases there and see what they bought.
Upstairs in the N.K. Whitney Store this is the living room area. This room has significance because when the brethren in the "School of the Prophets" would discuss subjects/questions/concerns Joseph would leave the room and received the revelation in this room.
The "School of the Prophets" room. The Father and the Son appeared here.
This is the testimony of Zebedee Coltrin (who was in the room at the School of the Prophets when they appeared). Sorry it is blurry and you will probably have to make it bigger to read it, but I thought it was an amazing testimony, in which you could feel the spirit just reading it.
If I remember correctly, this is a Waining Lamp. I liked it because when a father thought it was okay for his daughter to be courted he would light this in the window so suitors knew it was okay to come courting.
Sign for the Red Store, I can't remember if it was actually red.
The Outside of the 1st N.K. Whitney Store (Red Store).
This is a rocker, doll & bottle...Yes the silver thing in the rocker is a bottle.
John Johnson Inn (now houses historical artifacts). The Johnsons had a very nice farm about 30 miles from Kirtland and were asked to give it up or consecrate it to the church and then run an inn in Kirtland. Giving up their home helped pay for the Kirtland Temple.
The outside of the Sawmill. It only required 2 inches of running water to keep the saws moving.
Inside the sawmill was were the pulpits inside the Kirtland Temple were made.
The inside of the Ashery. What was ash used for? Soap, glass...actually a lot of things I just can't remember them all.
The first "Caller I.D." system for the Saints. Each lamp had a specific design punched into it so when someone was walking down the street you could identify the family.
The Chagrin River (I really thought that was a cool name) were many of the Saints were baptized in Kirtland.
The Kirtland Temple. Not a very good picture, I know...I just was not as impressed with this site because it was not owned by the church and hasn't been maintained as well as it should have (plus there is just not the same spirit there).
A painting I really liked of Christ appearing in the Kirtland temple.
Issac Morely Farm sign. In the farmhouse Joseph translated the Bible and Emma also had twins.
Morely School House sign. This is significant because the Father and Son appeared here along with numerous spiritual manifestations.
Painting of the Morley Log School house. The schoolhouse no longer stands but a portion of the farmhouse does. It is now used to house missionaries.
